As these seals don't actually touch the crank, there is really nothing to wear out. started using these in 1973. There are 1 or 2 O-rings on the outside diameter of the seal that could be changed. I use Permatex Motoseal 1. It's grey in color and is made to seal crankcase half's. Never had an issue with it. It's cheaper to replace the decals, then build up a little sled. The first time I drove a snowmobile was 7/4/72. It was a 71 488 Polaris Charger.

49,273 Posts. #19 · Oct 20, 2015. For one, its easier to work with, and two, when propping the crank you have to deal with the pistons still in their cylinders.....bit easier working with the crank with just the rods hanging out, don't need to install the seals working in the upside down mode.
Occasionally a broken skirt will get punched through the crankcase causing a fuel leak that at low engine speeds will cause that cylinder to act as though it simply isn't firing but at high speeds will not be as noticeable. This is not necessarily detectable by a compression test. That's all I can think of though.
Pull on crank by hand for any end play or any movement,should be no movement. Check pto stub run out,should be .0005 or less. Check run out on clutch,are clutch bushing loose & worn causing belt pulsing. Grab the clutch & check for any movement. Take secondary apart & check main bushings @ buttons.

A crank bearing on the PTO side will squeal amd allow the primary clutch to rattle. Its sound will change with increased RPM. A jackshaft bearing will only make noise under way and increase with speed. Temperature & snow conditions will affect ice build up in the tunnel and cause rubbing.
