If your engine has a crankshaft with a one-piece rear seal, you must use a flywheel (of flexplate) with a 3.00" bolt pattern. Flywheels and flexplates for these cranks are available in 12-3/4" and 14" diameters.
Press seal in to flywheel housing with spring recess towards crankshaft, lubricate with thickish oil. Use new "O" ring in recess, best using a plastic seal guide to slide the flywheel housing on to location dowels. Yes, the engine off the deck, pan off the bottom of the engine, crankshaft out, then remove the bearing from inside the crankcase. Once out, it should be inspected for both axial and radial play/noise, and replaced as needed. Hard to say what the useful life of the bearing should be, as conditions vary greatly.
