Coal - Only one area in North Carolina is known to contain coal beds of potential commercial importance. This area is the Deep River coal field which lies along the Deep River in Chatham, Moore, and Lee counties. The coal field is in the Deep River Triassic Basin and occupies a zone of about 35 miles long and 5 to 10 miles wide.
