Aug 19, 2015· I'm getting one of BigBlack's smelter valves and am trying to figure out what to put it in. My thought is a typical cut-in-half 20lb propane tank, but rather than using the bottom, use the top. I could take the smelting valve, have it threaded or weld it to a threaded adapter, and then put it right in the bottom (was the top) of the tank, allowing me to get every last bit of lead.
My next attempt involved making brass, specifically Prince Rupert's Brass, which is used as imitation gold. Due to the comparatively high temperature brass melts at, I had never achieved it before. However, after about thirty minutes in the furnace, the brass flowed like water, and I managed to get a bar with a total mass of 440 grams."
Feb 05, 2008· Need Tin or WW or Antimony (not alimony) to harden 'er up. I got some wheel weights from Wal-Mart the other day, about two gallon bucket worth. Sep 07, 2017· However, making one can be really simple and that's what this video is all about. By using a burner tube and drilling a hole on it for the tap and propane gas fitting where you'll connect it to the propane, and with a vacuum cleaner as an air source, even you can make your own forced air propane …
New furnace December 2020 Now I decided to make a new one, more compact but the same power (max 2400W). I got six K23 bricks from Keramikos, a pottery and ceramics baking supply store, these are rated for 1250°C, enough for such a furnace.I wound 12m of 1mm diameter Kanthal A1 wire in two coils in series in a square 11.5x11.5x11.5cm cm (4 1/2" x 4 1/2" x 4 1/2") furnace chamber.
Feb 09, 2009· YOU CAN DO IT. The basic idea is to line a steel drum or barrel with refractory. material such as fire brick, mortared together with fire-clay, sand. and refractory cement. That will get you a BIG smelter, one you'll. probably NEVER USE. So start with a SMALLER steel drum. Get yourself a 'boat' --. something in which to mix your refractory CEMENT.

Melting gold and platinum is essential for some hobbies, such as making jewelry. In order to do this properly, having the right tools is paramount. Before you visit the specialty store or shop online, you should know a little about the torches, crucibles and furnaces required to do the job.
2. Make a cardboard ring the size of the hole in the lid and tape it into place with duct tape. Also make a 2" thick ring of cardboard and set on a piece of wood. This is to make a base block to put the crucible on. 3. Mix enough castable for the lid and bottom, plus a little extra. 4. Fill the lid with refractory cement. 5.

Step 6: Insulate your forge. Use a 50/50 combination of Plaster of Paris and sand to insulate the base of your tray with a refractory coating. Mix the two ingredients together dry and add a small amount of water until it is a clay-like consistency. You are aiming for a 1cm coating all around the inside of the tray.

Step 3. Set refractory blocks in a circle slightly wider and higher than the crucible. A smaller furnace chamber will conserve heat, but you will have to fish the crucible out of the furnace so leave room for the tongs. Set the brick with the hole for the nozzle so that the torch will blow along the side wall of the furnace chamber.

Apr 06, 2021· Propane is one of the best fuel sources for melting gold. It reaches temperatures around 3,600 degrees Fahrenheit. That's more than enough to melt pure gold and any alloys or impurities. It is possible to use a simple propane torch, but we don't recommend it. It's much safer to utilize propane gas with a melting furnace.
