History. The borax method of gold extraction has been used by artisanal gold miners in the Benguet area north of Manila in the Philippines for more than 30 years. Some believe it was in practice as early as the 1900s. The method is increasingly being seen as a safe alternative to the widespread use of toxic mercury in artisanal gold mining today.
Set the gold ore and a small quantity of lead in a cupel. Place the cupel in a blast furnace. Heat the mixture until the lead and gold ore liquefy. The blast furnace batters the cupel with hot air. The lead combines with other metals and forms oxide compounds that separate from the gold. This process works best with small quantities of gold ore.
Borax and lime are used as flux agents in the cupellation process to separate silver and gold from base metals and other impurities. The process is carried out at temperatures between 800 and 900°C, i.e. lower than the melting point of the noble metals, and even below the temperature at which the slag becomes totally molten.
