Celestine (SrSO 4) is a common minor mineral in modern and ancient marine sediments and in some lacustrine evaporites. There are even marine planktonic protozoan organisms (the Acantharia) that precipitate celestine shells biogenically (Bernstein et al., 1987, Deckker, 2004).The limited amount of celestine in marine sediments agrees with the low concentration of Sr 2 …

Celestine or celestite is a strontium based mineral that frequently has a deep, sky-blue coloration. Celestine tends to form attractive, well-shaped crystals often found inside of geodes. The main source of Celestine is from the deposits on the northwestern coast of Madagascar, though it can be found in much smaller quantities world-wide.
Celestine is a strontium sulfate mineral first discovered in 1791 from Kelley Island, Lake Erie. It belongs to the barite group of minerals. It was named after the Latin word for celestial in allusion to the bluish color of the mineral.
Barite occurs in a large number of depositional environments, and is deposited through a large number of processes including biogenic, hydrothermal, and evaporation, among others. Barite commonly occurs in lead-zinc veins in limestones, in hot spring deposits, and with hematite ore. It is often associated with the minerals anglesite and celestine.
