Solid Oxide Membrane Process for Magnesium Production Directly from Magnesium Oxide A. KRISHNAN, X.G. LU, and U.B. PAL The solid oxide membrane (SOM) process is an emerging technology for the environmentally friendly extraction of high-energy-content metals such as magnesium, tantalum, and titanium directly from their respective oxides.
Magnesium oxide can be extracted from seawater by adding lime to form magnesium hydroxide. This is roasted to form caustic magnesium oxide. In the hydro magnesium route, magnesite is dissolved in hydrochloric acid forming a concentrated magnesium chloride solution. Table 1. Selected Magnesium Production Processes . Process Route
Mg + 1/2 O2 → MgO 1 mol = 24 g of Mg X mol = 12 g of Mg x = 0.5 moles of Mg Mg :MgO = 1:1 (coefficient from equations using mole ratio) So 0.5 moles of MgO 1 mol MgO = (24+16) g = 40 g 0.5 moles of MgO = 0.5 × 40 = 20 g of MgO produced
15-01-2019· Micronized grades of magnesium oxide are most widely used in the production of halogen-containing synthetic rubbers. In particular, MagPro® is used as an inhibitor of premature polymerization, an acid acceptor (HCl) during the production of synthetic rubber. In SMC and BMC production it acts as a thickener in premixes and prepregs.

Manufacturing process: Magnesium oxide is produced by the calcination of magnesium carbonate or magnesium hydroxide. The latter is obtained by the treatment of magnesium chloride solutions, typically seawater, with lime.. Mg 2+ + Ca(OH) 2 → Mg(OH) 2 + Ca 2+. Calcining at different temperatures produces magnesium oxide of different reactivity.
