Longwall mining is an efficient and a high production mining method; a single longwall face can produce more than 25 000 tons of coal per day. Longwall automation — productivity and coal quality A case study in an Australian longwall mine investigates the effects of automation on productivity, production rate and cutting profiles.
Around 90 per cent of Australia's underground coal production comes from longwall mining. Traditionally, a mechanical shearer cuts along the coal seam beneath a roof supported by hydraulic jacks, exposing miners to multiple risks. Increasing safety and productivity in longwall mining has been a long-term industry goal.
BHP Coal Mine – Crinum – Queensland Australia. One of Queensland's new generation of underground mines, Crinum produced its first longwall coal in June 1997.
Australian underground coal and metal mine safety and productivity benchmarks are among the world's best. At June 2015 in New South Wales, 17 underground coal mines with longwall operations and 4 bord and pillar mines produced 77. 4 million tonnes of the state's annual 253 million total raw production. In Queensland, 13
1988 totalled 12 Gg, estimated from data on mine gas emissions. Actual data from two Australian longwall operations totalled 74.3 Gg of methane emitted from one year's coal production. Australia has 17 active longwall operations, and several of them employ gas drainage techniques to reduce emissions into the workings. The methane contribution from
LONGWALL MINING Overview. In the method of secondary extraction known as longwall mining a relatively long mining face (typically in the range 100 to 300m but may be longer) is created by driving a roadway at right angles between two roadways that form the sides of the longwall block, with one rib of this new roadway forming the longwall face.
The longwall face is installed at the northern end of the panel and mining progresses south toward the main headings to complete the longwall extraction. Panel extraction timing is outlined in MOP Plan 3A. During 2019, mining was active within the Ulan West Underground in longwall panel LW5 and headings development commenced for LW6.
09-10-2014· Unlike conventional room and pillar underground coal mining, where subsidence is designed to be prevented, subsidence is a planned outcome of other methodologies. These include high extraction retreat, where the roof supporting pillars are systematically removed, and longwall mining, which employs a machine that mines a continuous strip of coal, thus leaving no roof supports.

Longwall mining - Global Energy Monitor. Longwall mining is a form of underground coal mining where a long wall of coal is mined in a single slice (typically 1-2 m thick). The longwall "panel" (the block of coal that is being mined) is typically 3-4 km long and 250-400 m wide. Longwall mining produced 176 million tons of coal in 2007, about 15 ...

01-12-2019· Outburst of coal and gas represents a significant risk to the health and safety of mine personnel working in development and longwall production face areas. There have been over 878 outburst events recorded in twenty-two Australian underground coal mines. Most outburst incidents have been associated with abnormal geological conditions.

Longwall mining systems are capable of producing significant outputs from a single longwall face – 8 million tones per annum or more. When operating correctly the coal is mined in a systematic, relatively continuous and repetitive process which is ideal for strata control and for associated mining operations
