20-01-2010· You won't kill it by putting in 10-15 gallons of cheap 46 weight hydraulic oil or thereabouts. The handle on top of the hydraulic box has three settings:-off: just provides luubrication for the ways. on: X axis power feed load: applies a pre-load to the Y axis (cross) feed leadscrew to remove any play when grinding up to a vertical edge.

13-03-2006· As far as I can tell, the JS 1400 had a separate hydraulic group (I'll have to name it that way as long as you won't tell me the english word). There are three pipes on the right side of the machine. Two of them are of a bigger diameter and we supposed they were the return of the oil to the reservoir (that seemed logical, we can not be sure).

18-02-2019· i have picked up a 1996 Jones and Shipman 540 surface grinder from an auction. It powers up fine, and everything works except one thing... The table feed only works in one direction, i have completely dismantled the valve, soaked it in degreaser for a day, blew every hole and gallery out with compressed air, i have removed the Y axis carriage from the ways and cleaned out every oil gallery.
03-03-2008· Way lube / vactra is the corect lube, though I prefer vactra #2. The ways appear to be worn smooth, so there is no room for oil between the pieces. I've been using Vacuoline 1409, pretty good sticky way oil but lets things slide quite well I think. I'm just not sure how good it would work in a surface grinder.
