Krugersdorp is not a place you would generally associate with foodies.
Zomato invited us to The Diner – a newly opened restaurant in Krugersdorp. I have to admit that I was slightly sceptical when driving all the way out there.
A nondescript building masks the beauty of this hidden gem.
Walking in, I had to pause to take it all in. The décor is out of a first rate restaurant you would find in the north. Very stylish and elegantly decorated; touches of greenery & proteas in vases balance the earthy stone finishing on the bar and wall accents. An aqua bar and feature wall are a nice touch.
The owners warmly welcomed us and gave us a history of the establishment as well as giving us some meal recommendations.
A platter of starters was put on the table and the foodies went beserk. We were taking photos and excitedly oohing and aaahing over the food.
A gorgeous presentation of nachos, tempura prawns, halloumi cheese, peri-peri chicken livers, grilled calamari, squid heads and onion rings served on a bed of fried spinach (fried spinach is delicious) awaited us. All these starters are available on the menu. Sometimes foodies are given separate food so as to impress us, but not in this case – our food looked the same as the food being served to other diners.
The owner and waitress all suggested that we try the ribs for our main meal – so most of us did.
1.5kgs of the tastiest ribs ever! The meat was so tender that I could pull it off the bone with a spoon if I wanted to. The marinade complimented the meat very well.
I had no space left for dessert, but being in a diner, it would have been wrong not to order the obligatory sundae. I ordered a Berry Blaze – fresh strawberries and raspberries atop deliciously creamy ice cream and cream interspersed with a berry compote.
Theoretically I should have also ordered a milkshake to fit the diner theme, however, I had seen a cocktail being served at the table next to us, and I wanted it!
The chilli and cherry mojitos are a signature drink of The Diner. The chilli has a very mild kick – just enough to lend a warm bite to the sweetness of the cherry. Another definite must!
The Diner is a wonderful restaurant to visit. Venture out of your comfort zone and make the effort to get to Krugersdorp. Your tastebuds will thank me!
