Montecasino is a favourite spot amongst many Gautengers. With the variety of restaurants on offer, as well as the family entertainment, it’s easy to see why. It’s also halfway between my place and a friend’s house, offers safe secure parking and is a good option for two ladies who want to go out for a burger without being harassed.
We decided on Gourmet Garage as the burger many is well known for it’s variety. There are close to 15 different burger options and all can be ordered as either a single or a double. All burgers are served with chips, onion rings or salad. Burgers are served with classic toppings such as cheese, mushroom or bacon. You can also try some of their more unusual options such as peanut butter.
The burgers are all standard and it’s only the topping or sauce that’s different, I decided to order a classic – the Cheese Burger (R80.00) and my friend created her own burger (bacon and avocado). We both selected onion rings as we had been eyeing the ones that came past us. Our burgers arrived quickly after we ordered them.
My burger was slightly undercooked from how I ordered it (I had ordered medium) but the cheese serving was generous. The usual trimmings were on the burger – lettuce and tomato and there was nothing different or exciting about the presentation. The bun was a good size and really soft. I enjoyed the cheese and bread the most. My onion rings were a little oily.
Overall the Gourmet Garage is a good option for a group where not everyone wants to eat a burger. However, based on the wine list, the service and the quality of my burger, I would rather venture to other establishments in Johannesburg for my burger fix.
Gourmet Garage is open every day for lunch and dinner.
