Cube has been on my wish list since I first heard about it.
But a place so high in demand, that recommends you set aside at least 3 hours for the experience, isn’t easy to get into.
We made our booking in the beginning of October! With every moment that passed, as the reservation drew closer, I started to panic that perhaps we had built up Cube in our minds so much that it couldn’t possibly live up to our expectation.
Using the handy widget on their site, we made our booking. A few moments later I received a confirmation email. What a breeze! The email details the guidelines for the restaurant and explains how it works.
This isn’t a normal experience.
Arrive within the time frame given or you will be missing out. Dress casually and comfortably – you’ll be sitting for a while!
Cube is not licensed and guests are advised of this quiet clearly. You are welcome to bring your own drinks and we saw guests with a good variety!
The menu for the evening is sent to you and there is a good wine recommendation. We made an effort to take along the wines that would pair well with the food. Of course, this is optional and entirely based on your own preference. We were welcomed by the friendly staff and selected our table for the night.
I made a point of sitting where I could see the open plan kitchen. I loved watching the chef’s in action! We were given a rundown of how the night would work and the waiter made sure our wine was on ice where required. We ordered a bottle of water and our wine was poured for us. The service overall was incredible. The waiters were always around to top up our glasses and they knew exactly which wine should be served next.
The food is served by a chef who explains the dish to you after he has set it down. You have an opportunity to chat to the chef and ask questions about the dish. Unless you’re too busy looking at what is in front of you!
We didn’t take photos of every course as I didn’t intend to write a full review. It was a special occasion so I wanted to sit back and enjoy the night, not think about the experience.
However, as I noticed the amazing effort that went into each dish, I couldn’t help but take photos. Food that looks this good deserves to be photographed. But quickly, before it gets cold and the moment is ruined. That’s why they aren’t that great.
The food is something special with each bite offering a new flavour explosion. To try and describe what we experienced would be an insult to the food. So much care and attention has been put into everything.
My only recommendation is to make a booking. Don’t hesitate.
Save up if you need to. But don’t miss out on this incredible culinary experience in Jozi
