Max Warner: Global Ambassador for Chivas Regal and entertaining storyteller.
I sat next to Max at dinner ahead of the Global Chivas Bartending awards held in Johannesburg.
Max is a knowledgable and enthusiastic ambassador for Chivas Regal and has been representing the brand for 12 years. Max explained how Chivas Regal is not only to be enjoyed by old men, but younger men too. The bartending competition is aimed at creating awareness for the many uses of Chivas as part of a cocktail or enjoyed alone. When serving with ice, it is imperative that the ice is of an excellent quality. *See note below
10 of South Africa’s bartenders who were identified as up-and-comers were given the opportunity to compete with each other by using Chivas Regal 12 Year Old as the base for their creations that personified the brand essence. The judges were impressed by Capetonian winner Johan Blaauw (Bascule/Cape Grace) and his simple, yet unique scotch-based cocktails.
Max will travel around the world to help choose winners from each country. We wish Johan all the best at the finals when he competes in Shanghai for the title of World Chivas Master in June. Do us proud Johan!
Are you a scotch drinker? How do you like yours?
*Perfect Ice: At the risk of getting the procedure incorrect, I will write down what I can remember; The ice needs to freeze very slowly so that it freezes clear. If you do not have a professional ice-maker, you can freeze a large stainless steel container of water, let it defrost and re-freeze. The remaining ice block will have an outer layer of opaque ice which can be chipped away to reveal clear ice underneath.
